The critical portion that is linked to the stride/no stride is the weight shift.

A portion of the hitters weight should be shifted to the back foot, then back to both feet. If the hitter happens to pick his front foot up during the shift back, he will then have a "stride" in his swing as the front foot lands. If he doesn't pick that front foot up with the shift back, he has no stride.

Either way is fine as long as there is some sort of a load or weight shift back to the back foot followed by the weight returning to a balanced position on both feet.
