The bat your son is using sounds about right. As far as length, all my kids (6, 8, and 10) hit better right with big 12-12.5 drops. When they get past 30", we will start using the -8 and lower drops.

For the record, my 8yo son is ~50" and 55# (small and skinny), and swings a 29"/17oz bat. My 6yo is ~45" and 45# (very small), and uses a 28"/15.5oz. Both bats are a tad heavy according to the Worth chart, but they can swing ok and maintain mechanics.
