I believe that Cobb didn't actually swing with a split grip. He had his hands apart in his stance, but would slide one hand or the other as the pitch came. If the pitch was inside he'd slide his bottom hand up so that he was choked up. If the pitch was outside the top hand came down, giving full extension.
