My thought on it is as the swing is initiated with heel drop,you aim the knob at the ball as your lead shoulder turns,then a little before 1/2 way through rotation the hands are drawn in tight as bht is being applied,the hand path is now tighter still fueled by rotation and the lead shoulder pulls back now and creates a hook affect to the chp.This allows the ball to be hit further back with a bat angle that keeps the ball fair.If you took the same swing as you would on a ball down the middle either you would get jammed or you would pull it foul way out front.
