I STRONGLY agree that lighter bats are not the answer. A year ago, we got him this ultra-light in a failed assessment that he was small and couldn't handle the heavier ones. Just the opposite actually... he COULD handle the heavier ones, he just needed to do it properly!

So now, when he hits BP with the wood bat (about 100 ounces!) he does so with proper mechanics. I tend to favor wood bats in practice because it truly forces a "student" to hit properly. In game situations, the sexy metals are fine...

As he gets older and faces more difficult pitching as SSarge suggested, he'll have more time to work on scap and THT, but for the moment, we're just trying to keep him on the right path and away from the fumes. (gasoline and perfume!) The grounders sound like they're a product of ahead-of-the-ball-timing which he can work on.
