Yes, I do think the swing mechanics the hitters exhibit in the Home Run Derby are the same mechanics you will see under game situations – because they are. I have never understood why someone would think that batters known to be home run hitters would for some reason need to alter their mechanics to hit home runs in the derby. Hitters like Sosa, Bonds and Big Mac have developed their swings to generate as much bat speed as possible whether it is in the derby or a game. They have hit shots in games just as far as those they hit in the derby. The only difference is that in the derby they know they are going to get a choice ball to hit on almost every pitch whereas in a game they will need to be more selective. But, when the ball is close to their power alley, you will see little or no difference in their mechanics than you would see in a home run contest. --- Do you think home run hitters change their game mechanics from those they used in pre-game batting practice?
