Re: hitting the ball on the sweet spot

Posted by: The Hitting Guru () on Mon Jul 26 09:52:00 2004

I have been having a problem with a lack of hitting the ball off the sweet spot. I work alot on my short swing because I know that it's important but for some reason I cannot hit the ball off the sweet spot of the bat. This is very frustrating because I'm working hard to get my swing in sync but I cannot figure this one out. Most of the time I hit the ball off the end of the bat whether it's down the middle or on the outside corner. The other times I just don't get the bat head out front enough to hit the inside pitch so I hit it off the handle. Is there a particular reason why I cannot get solid contact at the plate? What can I do to work on this? Anything will help. Thanks.

In regard to your first point, I would suggest that you use a bat that is an ounce heavier and or an inch longer. This will offord you additional time to stay in the zone longer. I would also suggest that you make a conscious effort to stride toward the pitcher, as you may be pulling of the ball which would cause you to hit the ball of the end of the bat.

In response to your second point, you may be starting your swing to late. In order to help you get the bat head out sooner, I would suggest that you stand deeper in the box and or open your stance slightly. This will allow you additional time to see the ball. It may also help to stand away from the plate a few inches. This will afford you added time to clear your hips in order to get to the inside pitch. Good Luck.
