Re: Uppercut swing

I have a player on my team who is a very stong and atletic guy, one who is capable of being a good hitter, but his swing is one of the most fundamentally flawed swings I have ever seen. What can I do with him, or tell him to do, to help correct his massive uppercut. We have made some progress, now he doesnt step in the bucket, but the uppercurt is still there. Any help would be appretiated.

If this guy is athletically gifted and very strong as you say he is then he might benefit from what some major league players do. And that is that they simply use an approach which allows them to make more solid contact. I would suggest to him to swing level or slightly down on the ball. This will help get his mindset on leveling out his swing, which will in turn reduce his uppercut. A player who has athletic gifts should be able to adapt and improve with the proper thinking. I would also suggest that he finish his swing across his middle half rather than above his head. Holding the bat less perpendicular could help as well. (see Cal Ripken Jr. or Robin Ventura) Lastly I would suggest that he concentrate on hitting the middle or upperhalf of the ball. Good luck.
