Re: best mechanics

Posted by: Dave A (oxagin@hotmail.com) on Wed Nov 3 12:26:06 2004

I have been researching the various hitting approaches over the last 3 months. I have read numerous books and seen numerous video tapes. I have visited this web site, as well as other sites including setpro, epstein, eteamz and several others. I have not spoken out until I had given a fair evaluation to all the approaches.
> > > > > > > > > > I have concluded that this site makes the best case for the best hitting philosophy, which is rotational mechanics.I have nothing against the other sites. Maybe they even believe in the same things Jack does but simply can not articulate themselves in the way you all can. Count me in as a believer in top hand torque, bottom hand torque, circular hand path, heavy bag drill and all the rest. It is obvious to me that knob-to-ball and the other linear stuff at the other sites is not the way to go for my son. Again, I have nothing against the other sites, and their philosophy might be appropriate for hitters with a lot of speed who can beat out a ground ball. However my son is big and slow, and his best shot is with power, and it seems evident that rotational mechanics is the best approach for achieving power.Thank you for allowing me to air my views.

Apparently that offer caused some resentment with another poster, causing him to wonder who I was. I wish him no ill will. As a matter of fact, my suggestion to him is to put his nose to the grindstone, learning and practicing Jack's principles, and maybe he will get a scholarship too.

If I would have stuck with linear I probably would have not even been looked at. Now all kinds of scouts have approached me. All credit goes to Jack.

Brett's post proved he is a liar because to be a first round talent you have to have more than one tool if you knew anything about baseball. You said you just started hitting rotationally after your junior year, well I doubt you have mastered it yet therefore I doubt you will be a first round talent if that is your only plus tool. Justin Upton, soon to be this years #1 pick, lets take a look at his tools. Plus bat speed, hits for power and average, runs a 6.2 60yd dash (Deion Sanders in his prime), smooth fielder with plus actions, and throws an easy 90+ across the infield. Please tell me how you stack up against him overall. Even if you are the Brett that is ranked in the Top100 in the country, you still are not going in the first round according to the scouting reports I just read.

Daryl, unfortunatly for you I will be getting money to play ball in college and even though I believe in Jacks principles and I thank him for all the information he has provided and all the research he has done to help me improve, he did not take thousands of swings a week for me.

That is what scouts and college coaches call "bad makeup," keep it to yourself.

For your information, the minor leagues are packed with guys with speed. Yes, the old school thinking is to sign guys with the 5 tools. That is in a perfect world and there are just not that many Willie Mays or barry Bonds out there. In the end, the required tools, assuming you don't have all 5 depends on your position. If you play 1b, power is mandatory. If you play right field, power and a strong arm is what you need. But in the end, there is lot's of guys with speed from which to chose from but very few with the potential power of a Bonds. Therefore there is a premium on the power hitters, 5 tools or not. I play 1b, no speed, no arm but will probably be the next Barry Bonds, without the speed, of course. I don't know if I will go in the 1sr round or not, but certainly I will go by the 2nd round. And believe me, without the mechanics I learned from this site, I probably would be preparing for a career in medical technology. My advice to you is to not be concerned with guys who have out-successed you. I don't know how old you are, but I would be willing to bet that you still have time to turn things around. You just need to focus on yourself and what you can do for yourself. Good luck to you.

> > > > > If you are going to take shots at me go ahead, you don't know me nor how good I am because I don't feel the need to announce it on a public website and claim I'm the next Barry Bonds. Shavon, please get over yourself.
> > > > >
> > > > > If you are going to make claims and you play ball currently, atleast tell us who you play for, what you are ranked and provide a copy of your scouting report because if you are a first or second rounder you definitely have reports done on you so you can have some credibility. I'm done arguing with the likes of yourself Brett and Daryl, frankly I think you are all a little full of yourselves and it seems a little fishy how you all pop up at once on the same board claiming you will all be top draft picks and college signees.
> > > >
> > > > Dave you must feel bitter about something and I think you should get over it. Your are the one who popped out of the woodwork and started taking shots at the others. No one provoked you to start asking for our scouting reports. The others can speak for themselves, but I do not have to show my scouting reports to you just because you question my credibility. What audacity! From what I can see people were simply expressing their gratitude to Jack and you seem to be outraged that someone else is successful? Just remember, bud, no matter how good you are or think you are there will alway be someone else better than you, always. Don't take it so personally, just work on your own skills, and maybe you can make it too. P.S. many organizations also do a psychlogical profile, because to play at a higher level there is a lot of PRESSURE, and they want to be sure you have the right TEMPERMENT.

> >

We worked on it about a week between games, and he went from a 1-12 slump to 16-19 after learing top hand torque. He showed off his newly acquired skills to some of the guys on his team and soon the whole team was hitting better. HOWEVER, I also know a few parents that it took one about 3 months to teach, another his kid struggled for almost 6 months before getting the hang of it.I would say to Dave A to not get discouraged if it is taking him longer than others. Everyone learns at their own pace, but if Dave hangs in there he will succeed, just like thousands of others including major leaguers have.

> It took me a week for top hand torque but the bottom hand torque took a lot longer to master. Has anyone including Dave encountered the same situation?

Top Hand Torque is very easy to master and Jack described how he teaches it in one of his previous posts. Bottom Hand torque is very tough to completely master for a lot of people because they were taught to throw their hands at the ball. I still am somewhat inconsistent with it ( I don't apply it perfectly everytime) but if you use THT correctly you can still drive the ball even if you are out in front on a curve etc... Ex: A-Rod.
