Number of Swings

Posted by: Jeff (jeffcobb1@peoplepc.com) on Fri May 2 21:03:19 2008

My son is six years old and is playing coach pitch baseball. On his own he decided to take 100 practice swings a day until baseball season ends - about 4 more weeks to go. He just repeats his complete swing again and again. He has done this every day for 11 of the last 12 days. He goes into the backyard, takes 50 swings, comes in to get a drink and then goes back and does a second set of 50 (all swings are right handed).

My wife just happened to mention it to his coach (a volunteer dad) today at practice (they practice once a week - this is not a competitive league by any means). The dad expressed concern, saying he thought that was excessive and our son should only take that many swings four days a week (every other day).

I know very little about baseball other than having played a couple of years of little league and having watched it on tv. What I do know is the kid LOVES sports and is in constant motion (running, jumping, throwing, etc).

So I'm asking for opinions. Is this number of swings ok for a six year old? Can it injure him in some way? Should we put a limit on him.

Thanks for the input.
- Jeff
