In terms of visualization in the mental approach to hitting, I think the angle of attack should be consistent with two things: 1. what the angle of the pitch plane is and 2. what you want to do with the ball. With the ideal goal of a higher batting average, the percentages are more in your favor with a 'downward attack' than an upward one. One of the best examples of the ideal swing swing was sent to me in 1990 by a former college coach in North Carolina (I don't even remember the school). It was a photo of a gentleman driving an axe into a tree. As the old coach stated, hands start high, drive the axe head slightly downward, and into an almost level plane at the point of contact. Did that explain it better?
