I have done the thumb drill for a long time. The hips and shoulders need to be turning in the same circle . Ideally not at the same time. If the hips turn " in a barrel" then so must the shoulders. This would put the hands in a CHP as well. To start this move with the hands to far from the shoulder would negatively affect the entire rotation.

The mechanism to get the hands inside or close and allow the hips to start first is important
