Your hands always stay inside the ball when you hit. If they didn't, the batter would be getting hit when he would swing the bat. Just focus on keeping your hands close to the body and stay rotational.

Scott. I would say that (like the other posters) ist basically means bringing the hands in when necessary in order to facilitate a short, quick swing. Of course the hitter has to also remember to take a full swing and extend through his swing.

The key is to stay under control as the hitter has to trust his hands to be quick enough while knowing that he can still be quick even though he is relatively close to the plate. In this approach the hitter is using his total body strength especially the upper body to swing through the ball even though he may be slightly jammed on occasion.

David Ortiz is a master at this skill. There is a rookie lefthander on the Cleveland Indians who hit a homerune today that does this well.
