Optimal Bat Speed

Posted by: Tom Waz (sluggoking@msn.com) on Fri Mar 11 05:37:14 2005

My son and I have been working with Jack’s DVD for a few months and I have a question or two. While working on the heavy bag with a “steering wheel knob” setup my son’s average batspeed is 42 mph. Normal swings on the heavy bag produce an average batspeed of 54 mph. Understandably the additional 12 mph is coming from either push/pull of the hands and/or BHT (we haven’t focused on THT yet).

I was wondering if this additional 12 mph is a normal/reasonable increase in batspeed or should we be looking to obtain a much higher increase?

My son is 13, 5-4 and weighs 90 pounds. He obtains these speeds with either his 31-26 game bat or my 34-31 softball bat.

Any input will be appreciated – Tom Waz
