That's the charlie lau way of hitting which became popular with george brett and derek jeter, the problem is that you short change youself a lot of batspeed and settle for weak liners to the opposite field. Ted Williams style of hitting features what he calls the short stroke with the hips popping followed by the accelerating of the uppper half to catch up. I have seen both styles and in my experience the guys who swing with their hips have had better power numbers and have been more impressive hitters.
