Put the bat down towards the catcher, top arm in the letter L position (the slot), and rotate towards the ball as someone pitches. I think you'll find that although the ball may not go far, the hit will be solid ("all of the ball"). If this test holds true for you like it has for me and my son; You ask a broad question but in my opinion, if a batter can get in the slotted position deep and early, then chances are "all of the ball" will be hit. Again, this is only my opinion (I'm not an expert) but I think you should ask/focus how can a batter practice on getting the bat back and on plane early in the swing? http://www.youthbaseballcoaching.com/mpg/Bonds01.mpeg

Focus is important but it is much easier to hit the ball when a batter swings on plane.
