There is no doubt, that the back foot at times comes off the ground.
What I definitely don't agree with, is to teach rear foot lift or, as you said, slide.
The result of what the rear foot does, is a by product of the swing taken, on a particular pitch. The same way someone shouldn't think hips, they shouldn't think foot slide.
One coach sees the foot come off the ground in a photo or, film so, he teaches his kids to think foot lift. Another coach sees a clip of a swing where the batter sat more on his rear foot. Should he then teach no foot lift? Of course not. Why? Because every pitch is different. Someone said" the perfect swing, is the adjustment made by the batter on a particular pitch."
I think that's a very accurate statement.
