I think there is torque in the sense of opposing forces being applied through (not generated by) both hands. I am a layperson,not a scientist, but would speculate that this action not only is important in setting swing radius and optimizing coil of the body,but also gets the bat turning in a way that encourages rotation/angular acceleration of the bathead as opposed to translation as the chp starts.

A real scientist should study this stuff with an open mind.
