As of now, I would say that the legs function to facilitate hip rotation in the quickest way possible. Hip rotation would then help rotate the shoulders, which speed up the hands. I would also say that while it IS possible to consciously move the legs into such a position, it would work better if the body was somehow programmed to do it naturally. If anything, it would make the swing more fluid.
