Not much difference with the bat speed of a nine year old. My son did the following experiment for a science project a few years ago: hit a large sample of baseballs off a tee using a good metal bat and a wood bat. Threw out poorly hit balls. Measured the bat speed and the exit speed of the ball. If my memory serves me correct the exit speed of the balls hit with the metal bat were about 7% higher on average than those hit with the wood bat.
