Not only did Gehrig's hits knuckle, making them difficult to catch, but Ted Williams is reported to have hit topspin line drives. Backspin is greatly overrated, especially if you have to work hard to change your swing without any guarantee of success.

JAC, if you read the book by watts and bahill you might conclude that backspin is not overrated...
