All great hitters have what you refer to as the "lag" position. This position is more pronounced in a hitter that keeps his hands "inside" the ball. When the swing is initiated with the hands, linear mechanics are used. However, the swing is quickly transferred using rotational mechanics when the legs and hips are introduced. If only rotational mechanics were used when swinging a bat, weight transfer would be extremely difficult, especially if the launch position is reached in a percentage other than 50/50, which, in great hitters, is seldom the case.
