I don't think Sheffield is all that "long", but he may look that way because of all of his bat waggling before the launch. You don't say what level player you are, so it's hard to pick the best fix. You could think about going with a no-stride swing if speed to the ball was paramount.

Mostly, your speed to the ball will come from a quick hip/torso/shoulder turn -- and you can work on speeding that up through drills, combined with a solid connection of the hands/arm/shoulder to the rotating body.
