I throw right handed and for most of my life batted right handed, although I played around with switch hitting but never got serious.
In my mid-20's I hit a slump and decided to give the lefty swing a go. Within two years of hard work, I was a better hitter lefty. Definitely more power (stronger right hand on bottom) and more comfortable (no fear of curves coming at your head). I cannot tell you how much I wish I had begun hitting lefty at an earlier age.
So let your son try lefty - but practice, practice, practice!
