In fact it is harder to bend the knees as much from a run, so it should result in less vertical leap. But it does not. The running start is energy in the system. It can be redirected/converted. If it is directed upwards, there is more energy for a running leap than for a standing leap, therefore you can jump higher with a running start.

> Jack,you said you were just wondering about the efficiency of just turning the hips as opposed to sliding the hips,then turning.I believe M.D. covered the moving idea and energy build up fairly well.However I believe there is more to hitting than just efficiency of batspeed.See their is this thing about adjusting to what you see that is very important.Now if you just stand still or static and try to read a pitch then decide to swing and then start to swing from a stand still you won't catch up.However if you are moving slowly or smoothly you have a head start to speed up from.You can also slow down or stop and adjust to the off speed pitch from here.there were times when a curve ball was coming that I would stop my momentum with a bent front leg and lose my momentum yet once it got to me I could turn on it and still hit it hard however not as hard as a well timed fastball where the weight shift to rotation was not interupted.This is the smooth acceleration I believe some talk about,or not exploding or jerky.However on the off speed pitch and you stop then start again it does look jerky yet can be very effective when waiting for a pitch.
