Top hand torque: to the ball or through the ball?

I was just wondering if you continue to use top hand torque through the ball, or just use top hand torque until you hit the ball and have a linear like follow through. I know what you do after contact doesnt give you power but wouldnt it help you not lose batspeed before contact?
