As far as having trouble with pitches due to location, I've found the "Hit-2-Win" or "Hittin' Stick" a valuable teaching tool. When the kid is having trouble connecting at a certain location, you can just place the ball there and have him practice swing after swing. Then move it around buit keep coming back to the trouble spots. I find it helps them "calibrate" their ball-finding radar.
