There are couple of reasons a driver (1 wood) hits further than a 3 or 5 wood. First, the driver clubface is more upright than the 3 wood. This launches the ball at a lower angle, which means more distance (kind of like the difference between a popup and a line drive). Also, the shaft of a driver is longer than a 3 wood, which should translate to greater clubhead speed - again, more distance. Although many driver clubheads are quite large, they weigh less than a 3 wood, which in turn is lighter than a 5 wood. This also means more clubhead speed and more distance.
