So if I start my swing too early then I don't lose some of the possible power that I can generate. If I turn first and then swing I am more or less swinging the bat with my entire body behind it and then my hands are just guiding the bat to where I want.

It should all flow together. When your lead foot hits the ground, you should be in the launch position. Then you explode your hips in unison with the swing.
