Your daughter's Coach is mistaken. This is a common myth about hitting. The arms have passed peak velocity when they are extended, they are in the process of slowing down. They are at peak velocity near the point when the back arm is in the "L" shape.

Do a google image search for "2006 Home Run Derby" and you'll come up with plenty of good pictures that show the correct position at contact....
