"slicing through the ball" is a cue. What that coach told that hitter really worked for that hitter. If he is really hitting well, that is terrific for him.
It doesn't mean that it will work for everyone. It might be the best thing to tell a few. Thinking that way as a hitter could work or not - depends on the player and how they hit and what they are doing or not doing.
