You dont necessarily need to keep your elbow tight in one position. You'll obviously need to extend with your back elbow slightly more on the outside pitch than on the inside pitch. Look at this clip of Pujols belting a 420 ft. homerun off an outside slider from Brad Lidge in the NLCS last year. Notice his right elbow is still bent at contact (You can pause it at the top of the page).
