Ted Williams said it many years ago, without going into minute detail: Keep your hands back as long as possible, and then be quick.

I have a video shot of Bonds from behind. He is hitting one of his homeruns. The oncoming pitch appears to be about 10 to 15 feet before there is any movement from his hands and arms.
