Hi Joe:

Best camcorder choice is any Mini DV camcorder that fits your budget. The cheapest ones will work great for video analysis and more expensive Mini DV camcorders will have more features for making home movies and editing, but the additional features will not be that useful with video analysis. Just make sure the Mini DV camcorder comes with a USB or firewire cable so that MotionView can capture the footage from your camcorder.

For those who already have a camcorder that is not a Mini DV - no problem - the new MotionView version 8.0 has you covered. MotionView analyzes video in WMV or AVI format, and the new 8.0 version has a built in converter than can automatically convert most footage to AVI if your camcorder records in another format.

The built in converter in MotionView 8.0 means that you should be fine with any Hard Drive or Flash camcorder that records in an MPEG format or on a memory card.

DVD camcorders are the most difficult because they require a (free) software conversion to convert the footage into AVI. Plenty of our students and coaches send us footage on a DVD from a DVD camcorder and we can convert the footage to AVI easily, but for those buying a new camcorder, stick with a Mini DV.

Mini DV will do the job perfectly right out of the box. They record directly in high quality AVI format at 60 frames per second and are simple to capture with MotionView.
