Jimmy. Staying on the ball for as long as possible is only really relevant if the hitter cannot connect with maximum efficiency.

EX. Reggie Jackson. He is the alltime strikeout leader. This means he swung and missed quite a bit. So it is unlikely that his bat was in the hitting zone for a long period of time for the most part.

But Reggie had such great strength and knack for rising to the ocassion that he was still able to be seen as benefiting his team. But a player with Reggie's strength and clutch skills would likely benefit from a more consistent approach.

Summary. The guy without the great gifts has to have better technique because the weaker physical player's marginal flyballs are not going out of the park.
