As the bat turns through the first 90 degrees the hands begin to travel forward. It is the combination of the hands moving forward and the bat entering into the lag position that create a linear phase. There is energy direction down the length of the bat along with rotation.

BTW, I see it John's swings. It also matters how far the hands come forward. Your right though, it looks different from above.
