Jimmy & TM:

First, let's try to make some progrss by cutting through the ambiguity (i.e., "there are linear components") and have you demonstrate the exact frame(s) and exact movement(s) that identify the "linear components" in either John or Pete Rose's swing. A video demonstation would be best, but if you do not have that available, then be as specific as you in identifying the frames.

Second, Jack (in the Final Arc 2 and new Swing Review Program) has a very simple method of instructing players on the correct hand path. Explain exactly how you teach a batter to use a rotational swing with linear components.
