> Ray- Welcome back,haven't seen you around for a while.As you and Batman and others point out,it's hard to talk about this stuff with words only because the underlying model of the swing isn't agreed on,definitions of terms are lacking and multimedia/linking/integration is difficult.Jack's approach of objectively identifying visual universal fundamentals and illustrations of his model swing drawn from real clips is helpful.Perhaps in the absence of actually posting clips here,it might someday be possible for contributors to put in links or attachments.For now this can work because there are good contributors here who are enough on the same wavelength to improve understanding.

With the exception of some of the players with exceptional range and/or strength, there are four ways an outside pitch can be hit.

(1) Extend the top arm, contact the ball in the middle and in front of the plate. This creates two problems. (A) If you contact the ball too far out in front of the plate, the top hand will prematurely roll over. (B) Let the ball get in just a little bit towards the back of the plate so as to not roll over the top hand and you don't have much on the swing because the bat is increasingly becoming disconnected fomr the body.

(2) Use full hip and shoulder rotation and you essentially swing the sweet part of the bat towards, but then away from the path of the ball.

(3) Use full hip and shoulder rotation and contact the ball before the sweet part of the bat starts turning away from/ out of the path of the ball.The problem with this, and it's an important point missed by a lot of people (and one of the major flaws in Epstein's pinball theory)and that is that you are contacting the ball exactly at the point where the bat has finished descending. But yet there is very little if any upswing left in the swing so extreme precision is of the essence. As good as Sosa is in driving the outside pitch, could this be why he strikes out so often?

(4) Don't worry about as much shoulder/hip rotation. Contact the inside part of the ball with the knob leading,contact farther back of the plate, and create artifical additional upswing. This gives you more room for error.

Yes, I agree that relying more on arms/hands results in SOME decrease in batspeed, but we are searching for the optimal tradeoffs.
