If the bathead is lagging, the bat might be too heavy for him. What my friends grandpa (played first base for the yankees for a couple seasons) told me to do is...
1) Get your regular grip on the bat
2) Hold your hands directly above your head
3) Swing straight down as hard as you can (like you are chopping wood)

If the player can stop the bat before his hands get below his belly button, the weight is fine.
