Sean,
Don't think of creating torque with your hands. Do it with your hips. Think about driving your back hip through the ball and at the same time pulling your front hip backward. You will really tighten up your hip rotation and create more force. Just be careful that you keep your hands going forward toward the ball and not casting them as your hips move in a circular motion.
