Re: poping up

Posted by: Ken Krause (ken.krause@techimage.com) on Fri Mar 29 12:53:05 2002

I am a sophmore in high school. I use a 32, 23 bat and am 5'2. Last year I had a lot of line drives and base hits, batting avg. 385 with 7 strikeouts. This year I am 5 for 14 with one bunt and the others were mostly errors of catchable hits but I am poping up. Help please.

Without seeing you swing it's hard to diagnose. But one common thing I see among hitters who have trouble with popups is that they drop their hands before they swing, and then swing straight across the plate, which causes them to get under the ball too much. If you hit the lower 1/3 of the ball, it will go up in the air. Try to keep your hands above the ball as you start bringing them through, then match the ball location as you finish rotating through -- get the bat on the same plane as the middle of the ball.

Are you popping up on high pitches, low ones, or all of them?
