I have noticed that when my son starts fouling the ball back or fouling toward 1st base (right handed hitter), there are two things that I look for:

1) Bending his knees and getting in a good athletic stance.
2) Bat head falling below a 45 degree angle at launch. It seems that the closer his bat gets to being parallel to the ground, the more likely he his to foul the ball back.
