Neither of the two legs have to drive in any direction for the hips to open. You can be standing still with or without a bat in your hands and, open your hips. In all due respect, I think people tend to try to see more into something that doesn't even exist. I'm from Boston and, have seen the swings of Manny, Big Pappi, etc.all in very , very, slow motion, there is no leg drive! There doesn't need to be.
