"I would tend to go more with the first approach because it is easier to conceptualize. And hitting the ball out in front more likely promotes extension and promotes getting the fat part of the bat to the ball. The latter suggestion, may cause the hitter to think to much and result in a late swing/start which is not recommended unless the hitter is intentionally hitting to the opposite field. The powerful stroke is a by product of solid mechanics in the entire swing."

Extension is the EFFECT OF a good swing, not the CAUSE of a good swing.
