The trunk connects lower body to upper body. It is important that any lag of shoulders behind hip turn creates tension and ultimately accelerates the shoulders. A disconnection of hips and shoulders would render the hip turn useless.
Jack talks about this as the 'slipping transmission'. Abs, obliques, etc. work to connect hips to shoulders in the trunk.
