Where to hold bat

My son just went through a round of lessons with rotational hitting. They had him have the bat on his shoulder which seemed to be akward to him. He also had an issue of not relaxing so having the bat in such a sturdy position seems to make it worse. he is 11, any thoughts on where to have the bat
