Theoretically(Jack's theory),you will make contact with the bat perpendicular to the flight of the ball,this will be the furthest the bat tip gets from the body(in the direction of the opposite batter's box),and you want to make contact on the sweetspot.The bat should clear a fence that is away from the contact point by the distance of the sweetspot from the tip of the bat,give or take a little.

You don't want to cheat by dragging the bat/pushing the hands/straightening the handpath.
