Mark,

I see many hitters at toe touch stride closed. But at heel drop the front foot must open to get separation and not lock out the hips too much. This is the point you were probably going to make.

One thing I have also noticed is the tendency of hitters on pitches away not to open the front foot as much if at all. This may be due the fact that hitters are taking the ball deeper in the zone and don't use as much hip rotation early in the swing. I have a couple stills of Bonds on pitches that are away where his front foot is more closed at contact.
