how far away from the home plate is the ball when MLB hitters start the swing?

Hi guys, great site.

Does anyone know how far away the ball is from the home plate when MLB hitters hit an average fastball (92 mph or so)? I'm talking about the actual swing (heel plant or start of hip rotation or whatever you use as indicator) and not the start of the stride.

I would asume they have to start pretty early and don't have much time for making that decision given the fast pitch speed.
