I have read epstein's material on "wathervaning" and I have his tape, but the concept is still a bit unclear to me.

I think most of Epstein's cues lend themselves well to encourage the quick "flail" type rotational swing.See my shoulder dip response below.

The drop and tilt is the tht portion of the swing where separation is maximized before the torso
"launches".There is some back shoulder dip here which is part of the body stretching as the hip uncoccks and the box forms(back elbow down/front elbow up.This then creates a stable configuration and gets the torso/bat ready to receive momentum from the lower body.

Weathervaning is an image of where the front elbow(tightly connected as proxy for torso position in space)is going to go as the launch proceeds.-the motor program has already been picked to set axis of rotation and timing of launch/swing.Similar cues are the "set your sights high/stay on top,etc.See Epstein's flare thread as well as rql's post.
